Shadow Mountains (western San Bernardino County)

Shadow Mountains are a small range in western San Bernardino County, California. They stretch about 10 miles (16 km) long and 6 miles (9.7 km) wide.

Location and views
- The southeastern edge lies about 4 miles (6 km) northwest of Adelanto and 6 miles (10 km) west of the Mojave River; the northern part is roughly 14 miles (22 km) north-northwest of Adelanto.
- The highest point is Shadow Mountain, at about 4,120 feet (1,256 meters) above sea level, with a radio tower on top. Silver Peak nearby reaches about 4,041 feet.
- From these peaks you can get good views of the desert and Edwards Air Force Base.

Access and management
- Part of the southern mountains falls within the El Mirage Off-Highway Vehicle Area, managed by the Bureau of Land Management.

Geology and natural resources
- The rocks vary across the range: the northeast and southeast have Pre-Cretaceous metasedimentary rocks; the center features granite and adamellite. The extreme southeast has some Carboniferous marine rocks, and the extreme north has Pleistocene nonmarine rocks.
- Mineral resources include fluorite and tungsten.
- Plants found here include winter fat (Krascheninnikovia lanata) and Fremont’s phacelia (Phacelia fremontii).
