Shōryūji Castle
Shōryūji Castle (Shōryūji-jō) is a hilltop castle in Nagaokakyō, Kyoto, Japan. It was built in 1339 by Hosokawa Yoriharu to defend Kyoto. During the Ōnin War it served as a fortress for the western alliance. In the Sengoku period it was occupied by Iwanari Tomomichi of the Miyoshi clan. The castle fell to Oda Nobunaga in 1568 and was later given to Hosokawa Fujitaka, who held it until 1579. After the Yamazaki Battle, where Toyotomi Hideyoshi defeated Akechi Mitsuhide, the garrison collapsed and Mitsuhide died while fleeing. The castle was demolished in 1649. Today, imitation stone walls and turrets have been reconstructed, but only ruins remain of the original castle.
