ITV1
ITV1 is a British free-to-air TV channel owned by ITV plc. It provides the Channel 3 public service across most of the United Kingdom, with STV serving central and northern Scotland. ITV1 grew from regional ITV companies into a single national channel, while still showing regional news and programmes for different areas.
In 2002 English and Welsh regions adopted national continuity, so ITV1 looked like one countrywide channel with regional news slots. Granada and Carlton merged in 2004 to form ITV plc, which later bought Channel Television and UTV.
ITV1 is the UK’s biggest commercial channel. It has an HD version (ITV1 HD) and a time-shift channel (ITV1 +1). UTV joined ITV in 2016 and began using ITV’s continuity in 2020. In 2013 the channel was renamed from ITV1 to ITV, and on 15 November 2022 it returned to the ITV1 name as part of a brand refresh with a blue logo and shared idents across ITV’s channels.
