Rapunzel (Tangled)
Rapunzel is a princess from Disney’s Tangled (2010). She’s based on the Rapunzel fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm. Born to Queen Arianna and King Frederic, she is kidnapped as a baby by Mother Gothel, who wants to use Rapunzel’s magical healing hair to stay young. Raised in a hidden tower, Rapunzel believes Gothel is her mother. Her hair’s healing power can be activated by a song.
On her 18th birthday, Rapunzel longs to see the floating lanterns that light up the sky every year. She teams up with Eugene “Flynn Rider” Fitzherbert, a wanted thief who promises to help her see the lanterns in exchange for a crown. They escape, fall in love, and travel to Corona.
Gothel chases them, and Rapunzel learns the truth about her royal identity. In the end, Rapunzel is reunited with her parents. Flynn (Eugene) helps save Rapunzel, and in a final battle, Flynn cuts Rapunzel’s hair to break Gothel’s control. Gothel dies, Flynn is wounded but Rapunzel’s tears heal him, bringing him back to life. Rapunzel becomes part of the royal family, and she and Flynn plan to marry.
Creation and impact: Rapunzel is the tenth Disney Princess and the first computer-animated one. She’s known for her long hair, independence, and love of painting and reading. Mandy Moore voices Rapunzel. The film was directed by Nathan Greno and Byron Howard, with Glen Keane as supervising animator. Rapunzel’s hair posed a major technical challenge and required new CGI work.
The song “I See the Light” from Tangled was nominated for Best Original Song at the Academy Awards in 2011 and won the Grammy for Best Song Written for Visual Media in 2012.
