Randy Sexton
Randy Sexton (born July 24, 1959) is a Canadian ice hockey executive, businessman and former player. He is the Senior Advisor to the General Manager for the Minnesota Wild. He has held several top hockey jobs, including assistant general manager of the Buffalo Sabres and general manager of the Rochester Americans from 2017 to 2020. He was also the director of amateur scouting for the Pittsburgh Penguins and the general manager of the Ottawa Senators and the Florida Panthers. He helped Found the Ottawa Senators.
Sexton was born in Brockville, Ontario. He attended St. Lawrence University from 1978 to 1982 on a hockey scholarship, after playing for the Cornwall Royals. He served as team captain for his final two seasons and received multiple awards. From 1983 to 1985 he was an assistant coach at St. Lawrence, while also handling scouting and recruiting. He later earned an MBA from Clarkson University.
In 1989, Sexton was vice-president of Terrace Investments, a development firm in Ottawa. He worked with Bruce Firestone and Cyril Leeder on reviving NHL hockey in Ottawa and building a new franchise. He was named Ottawa’s general manager in 1993 and served until 1995. He drafted Alexandre Daigle in 1993 and signed him to a record rookie contract, which led to league restrictions on rookie deals. He was fired in December 1995.
Afterward, he worked in sports marketing with Capital Sports Management. When the Senators built the Bell Sensplex ice rink in 2004, he became executive director. On January 27, 2007, he was hired as the Florida Panthers’ assistant general manager, working under Jacques Martin. He became the Panthers’ general manager on October 2, 2009, but was replaced after the 2009–10 season.
On July 3, 2010, Sexton joined the Pittsburgh Penguins as assistant director of amateur scouting, later becoming co-director and then director of amateur scouting. In 2017 he became assistant general manager of the Buffalo Sabres and general manager of the Rochester Americans, a position he left on June 16, 2020. On January 1, 2021, he joined the Minnesota Wild as Senior Advisor to the General Manager.
Sexton’s sons are Ben and Patrick. Ben played for the Bruins, Penguins and Senators and is now an assistant coach with the Senators. Patrick played NCAA hockey for Wisconsin from 2015 to 2017.
