Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission
Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission (PVSC) is a public wastewater utility based in Newark, New Jersey. Created in 1902, PVSC treats sewage for about 1.5 million people in 48 towns across Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Union, and Passaic counties. It also runs environmental education programs for local schools. Major cities in the area include Newark, Jersey City, Bayonne, Union City, East Orange, Passaic, Paterson, Clifton, and North Bergen. The PVSC treatment plant uses activated sludge secondary treatment, with a design capacity of 330 million gallons per day, and discharges into Newark Bay. In addition to handling its own customers’ waste, PVSC also processes liquid waste and sludge from other facilities, including the Bergen County Utilities Authority.
