John Denis Wakeling MC (12 December 1918 – 10 October 2004) was an Anglican bishop in the Church of England. He was born in Leicester, educated at St Michael's Limpsfield, and studied classics at St Catharine's College, Cambridge. He served in the Royal Marines during World War II and was awarded the Military Cross in 1945 for his part in Yugoslav operations. After training for the ministry at Ridley Hall, Cambridge, he was ordained in 1948. He was a chaplain at Clare College, Cambridge, then vicar of Emmanuel, Plymouth (1952–1959) and Barking, Essex (1959–1965). In 1965 he became Archdeacon of West Ham. He was appointed Bishop of Southwell in 1970 and was consecrated at York Minster on 29 September 1970. He chaired the Archbishops' Council on Evangelism from 1976 to 1979 and retired to Salisbury in 1984. He married Josephine Broomhall in 1941, and they had two sons.
