Out of the Everywhere (Upstairs, Downstairs)
Out of the Everywhere is the eighth episode of the second series of Upstairs, Downstairs. Set in 1909, the episode follows Elizabeth Kirbridge as she gives birth to a daughter, Lucy Elizabeth, in a London nursing home. To avoid scandal and because Lawrence is the legal father, he attends Lucy’s christening. After the ceremony, Lawrence disappears and is never heard from again. Elizabeth is not maternal and is happy for Lucy to be raised in the nursery by an old, ailing nanny. Later, Sarah becomes Lucy’s nursery maid and saves the baby from Nanny Webster’s careless care. The episode was directed by Christopher Hodson and written by Terence Brady & Charlotte Bingham, and it originally aired on 8 December 1972.
