He served as Mayor of Galway from June 2006 to June 2007, becoming the city’s first Green Party mayor, and opened the Galway City Museum during his term. He was elected to Galway City Council in June 2004 with about 10.93% of the vote, narrowly beating Fianna Fáil’s Tom Cox by 40 votes. He was elected to the Seanad (Irish Senate) in December 2009 on the Agricultural Panel in a by-election caused by Alan Kelly’s move to the European Parliament, with backing from Fianna Fáil. He received 119 votes out of 205. He lost his seat in the 2011 Seanad election.

Today he works as a research unit leader with the ASPECT Unit (Analytics for Sustainable Policies towards Environmental and Climate Transition) at the Insight Centre for Data Analytics (formerly DERI) at the University of Galway, focusing on environmental and climate policy analytics.
