Next Sarawak state election

The next Sarawak state election, known as the 13th Sarawak general election, will elect the 20th Sarawak State Legislative Assembly. It must be held by 10 April 2027 at the latest, depending on when the current Assembly first sits. All 99 seats will be contested, as the assembly was expanded from 82 to 99 seats in 2025.

How the election works: Malaysia uses a Westminster system. The party or coalition that wins a majority of seats (at least 50) forms the government, and its leader becomes the Premier. If no party wins a majority, a coalition or confidence-and-supply arrangement can form a government.

Voting and administration: Elections are run by the Election Commission. The voting age is 18. Voters are automatically registered, and voting is not compulsory.

Parties and expectations: The governing GPS, led by Premier Abang Johari, is contesting all 99 seats. The main opposition is DAP, which has targeted up to 18 seats. PSB merged into PDP (a GPS component party) in 2024, so there is no separate PSB in Sarawak.
