Bierley, West Yorkshire
Bierley is an area in the Tong ward of Bradford, West Yorkshire, England. It is about 2.3 miles southeast of Bradford city centre, just south of the A650 and A6036 roads. Nearby places include Oakenshaw, Low Moor, Odsal, Bankfoot, West Bowling, East Bowling, Dudley Hill, Holme Wood, Westgate Hill and Tong Village. East Bierley lies to the southeast in Kirklees.
Historically, Bierley was a township in the parish of Bradford and was also known as North Bierley. In 1841 about 9,500 people lived there, rising to around 12,500 by 1861. North Bierley became a separate civil parish in 1866, later an urban district from 1894 to 1899, and it included North Bierley and Wyke. In 1951 the parish had about 26,739 residents.
Today, the modern Bierley housing estate, along with Bierley Hall Wood and the hamlets of Bierley Lane and Hilltop, are part of Tong ward. Low Moor and Carr Lane are in Wyke ward, while Wibsey, Slack and Folly Hall are in Wibsey ward. North Bierley Cemetery opened in 1902 between Low Moor and Buttershaw.
