Mordechai Bar-On
Mordechai Bar-On (December 26, 1928 – March 7, 2021) was an Israeli historian, the IDF’s Chief Education Officer, and a politician. He was born in Tel Aviv during the British Mandate. He joined the IDF’s officer training in 1948 and served in the Givati Brigade as a platoon and company commander. In 1954 he founded the Academic Pool; in 1955 he headed the History Department of the General Staff, and in 1958 he led the Chief of Staff’s bureau. From 1961 to 1963 he was deputy Chief Education Officer, and in 1963 he became head of the Education and Youth Corps. He left the army in 1968. Afterward he worked for the Jewish Agency, leading its Youth and Pioneering Department until 1977. Bar-On later became a leader of the Peace Now movement. He was elected to the Knesset in 1984 on the Ratz list, and served until resigning on November 26, 1986; he was replaced by David Zucker. He died in Jerusalem on March 7, 2021, at age 92. He authored several books.
