Monieux

Monieux is a small town in southeastern France, in the Vaucluse department of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region. It sits on a high plateau near Sault, with the Nesque river running through it, and covers a large area with about 260 residents. The area has a Mediterranean climate: hot, dry summers and mild winters, and plenty of sunny days.

The local economy centers on farming, including lavender and lavandin, old varieties of wheat, honey, and sheep breeding. Part of Monieux lies within a Biosphere Reserve around Mont Ventoux.

A piece of medieval history notes a brutal attack on Jews during the First Crusade. A Hebrew manuscript found in the Cairo Geniza mentions a resident of Monieux, but later scholars debated where the event actually happened, with some arguing it was Monieux and others suggesting Muño in northern Spain. The interpretations of the manuscript keep some uncertainty about the exact location.
