1991 Bremen state election
The 1991 Bremen state election was held on 29 September 1991 to elect the Bürgerschaft of Bremen and the city councils of Bremen and Bremerhaven. The incumbent Social Democratic Party (SPD) government led by Mayor Klaus Wedemeier lost its majority, suffering an 11.7-point swing against it.
After the vote, the SPD formed a three-party coalition with The Greens and the Free Democratic Party (FDP), allowing Wedemeier to stay as mayor.
Results (out of 100 seats, majority is 51):
- SPD: 41 seats, 38.8% of the vote (down from 54 seats)
- CDU: 32 seats, 30.7% (up from 25)
- Greens: 11 seats, 11.4% (up from 10)
- FDP: 10 seats, 9.5% (about the same)
- DVU: 6 seats, 6.2% (up from 1)
Turnout was 370,148 voters, about 72.2% of eligible voters.
