Joseph Firmenich
Joseph Firmenich (also spelled Josef) (1821–1891) was a German painter. He was born in Cologne and died in Berlin. He is described as largely self-taught. Some sources say he served as a court painter for the Grand Duchy of Hesse and painted landscapes, especially natural scenes from Tyrol and other regions. Other sources say he was a student of Simon Meister. In France, he took part in a bet that German painters could paint more accurately than French painters; he painted an oak tree in about an hour and won the challenge.
