Madison County, Mississippi Territory
Madison County was a part of the Mississippi Territory that later became Alabama. The land was ceded by the Cherokee in the 1806 Washington treaty (ratified in 1807). The county was created in 1808 and named after James Madison. In 1809, about 2,223 white residents lived there, along with 322 enslaved Black people. The land was surveyed in 1809 and first sold from the land office in Nashville, Tennessee. In 1811, Huntsville was incorporated within the county, and the General Land Office moved from Nashville to Huntsville.
