Midleton Library
Midleton Library, or Leabharlann Mainistir na Corann, is on Main Street in Midleton, County Cork. It is a protected building that now serves as the public library.
The Italianate-style building was completed in 1789. It was originally the market house and town hall. The site has a long history: a market building stood there by the late 1600s, and a clock was added around 1750. In the early 1780s, George Brodrick, 4th Viscount Midleton, had a new structure designed by John Morrison.
The front has five bays facing Main Street and an arcade on the ground floor for markets, with meeting rooms above. Inside, the ground floor held the market hall and shambles, and the first floor had an assembly room and council chamber. The Midleton Corporation was abolished in 1840.
After the Fenian Rising in 1867, soldiers from the 14th Regiment of Foot were billeted there. In 1900, Midleton Urban District Council began using the building as its town hall. The market hall area later became the town library. A major refurbishment to restore the building was completed in 2008.
