Gomel Governorate
Gomel Governorate was a regional division of the Russian SFSR from 1919 to 1926, with its capital in Gomel. It was created from nine uyezds of the abolished Mogilev Governorate, one uyezd from Minsk Governorate, and four uyezds from Chernigov Governorate, for a total of fourteen.
Key changes over the years:
- 1920: Orshansky Uyezd moved to Vitebsk Governorate.
- 1921: Surazhsky Uyezd renamed Klintsovsky.
- 1922: Goretsky Uyezd moved to Smolensk Governorate.
- May 4, 1923: Mglinsky and Cherikovsky Uyezds abolished; Pochepsky District established.
- May 5, 1923: Gomel Governorate transferred to Bryansk Governorate.
- 1923: Bykhovsky, Klimovichsky, and Cherikovsky Uyezds abolished; Kalininsky Uyezd founded.
- March 1924: Kalininsky, Mogilyovsky, and Rogachev Uyezds transferred to the Byelorussian SSR.
- December 1926: Gomel Governorate abolished. Gomelsky and Rechitsky Uyezds joined the Byelorussian SSR; Klintsovsky, Novozybkovsky, and Starodubsky Uyezds joined Bryansk Governorate of the RSFSR.
