Tony Nicholson
Tony Nicholson was an English cricketer who played for Yorkshire from 1962 to 1975 as a right-arm medium-fast bowler. Born Anthony George Nicholson on 25 June 1938 in Dewsbury, he later worked as a policeman in Southern Rhodesia before moving into county cricket. Nicholson helped Yorkshire win the County Championship five times between 1962 and 1968, usually opening the bowling with Fred Trueman. He earned his Yorkshire county cap after the 1963 season and had a benefit in 1973 that raised more than £13,000. He appeared in 283 first-class matches and 120 limited-overs games, taking 879 first-class wickets and 173 List A wickets, with best innings figures of 9 for 62. Although he was selected for England’s 1964–65 tour of South Africa, he had to withdraw due to an injury and never played Test cricket. Ill health—blood clots in his leg—later affected him, and he died on 4 November 1985 in Harrogate at the age of 47. The Yorkshire Players Association honours him with a Tony Nicholson Memorial Trophy.
