Michael Kaeshammer
Michael Kaeshammer (born January 7, 1977) is a Canadian pianist and singer known for boogie-woogie, blues and jazz. He was born in Offenburg, West Germany, and studied classical piano for seven years. At 13 he fell in love with boogie-woogie and stride piano, inspired by Albert Ammons, Meade Lux Lewis and Pete Johnson. As a teenager he played in clubs across Germany and Europe. His family later moved to Canada’s west coast, where he began performing at festivals in 1996 and released his first album, Blue Key. He followed with Tell You How I Feel (1998) and No Strings Attached (2000). He has opened for artists such as Anne Murray, Ray Charles, Allen Toussaint, Colin James, The Blind Boys of Alabama and Holly Cole, and has toured China and performed at Canada Day celebrations in Trafalgar Square, London. In the United States he has appeared at the Queen City Blues Fest in Cincinnati.
Kaeshammer released Strut in 2003 and performed a Jazz Sessions solo broadcast on Bravo! in 2004. He toured Canada in 2005 and performed at major events, including the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and the 2010 Paralympics opening ceremony in Vancouver. His later albums include Days Like These (2007), Lovelight (2009), a self-titled album (2011), KaeshammerLIVE! (2012), With You in Mind (2013) and The Pianist (2015). He has received seven Juno Award nominations and won the 2008 Juno for Vocal Jazz Album of the Year for Days Like These, along with West Coast Music Awards for Musician of the Year and Entertainer of the Year. His 2016 album No Filter blends jazz, blues and boogie-woogie, and he performed at the Maple Blues Awards in Toronto that year.
In fall 2023, he launched Kaeshammer's Kitchen, a TV series on CHEK-DT and Yes TV that combines cooking with music and features guest musicians.
