Robin Barbour
Robert Alexander Stewart "Robin" Barbour, KCVO MC (11 May 1921 – 18 October 2014) was a Church of Scotland minister and author.
Robin Barbour was born in Edinburgh to George Freeland Barbour and Helen Hepburne-Scott. His father was the laird of Bonskeid, Pitlochry, and a respected philosopher and theologian.
He was educated at Cargilfield Preparatory School and Rugby, then began at Balliol College, Oxford before World War II. During the war he served in the Italian campaign with the Scottish Horse and was awarded the Military Cross for his service.
After the war, Barbour finished at Balliol with a double first in classics and philosophy. He earned a teaching qualification in Edinburgh, studied divinity at the University of St Andrews, and also studied at Yale University.
He became a minister in 1954 and later taught divinity at the University of Edinburgh. He was Professor of New Testament Exegesis at the University of Aberdeen from 1971 to 1982. He was Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland from 1979 to 1980, the youngest person to hold the post.
In 1981 he was appointed Dean of the Chapel Royal in Scotland, serving until 1991. He was an Honorary Chaplain to the Queen and a chaplain of the Order of St John of Jerusalem.
Barbour married in 1950 and had four children. He retired in 1986 but remained active in church ministry. He died on 18 October 2014 in Perth, Scotland.
