Christopher Martin “Marty” Johnstone (1951–1979) was a New Zealand drug trafficker from Auckland. He was nicknamed “Mr Asia” by the Auckland Star in August 1978. In October 1979 he was lured to Britain for a supposed drug deal in Scotland and was murdered by Andy Maher, ordered by Terrance John Clark. Maher cut off Johnstone’s hands and mutilated his face to foil identification by police, and his body was dumped in Eccleston Delph, Lancashire. Clark and four others were convicted of murder and given life sentences. The 1980 trial at Lancaster Castle was one of Britain’s most expensive cases at the time and had heavy security. Clark died of a heart attack in prison on the Isle of Wight in 1983. The case was later dramatised in a 1992 Crime Story episode titled All Good Friends: The Case of the Handless Corpse.
