Italia Valley
Italia Valley is a small valley on King George Island in the South Shetland Islands, located just northeast of Hervé Cove in Ezcurra Inlet. It was originally called Conca Italia, or Italian hollow. The valley holds the ruins of the first Italian building in Antarctica, built by a private Italian expedition led by Renato Cepparo in 1975–76. The building was destroyed by the Argentine Navy in September 1976. A plan to protect the ruins as a Historic Site and Monument was submitted to the Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting. The area is also connected to Italy’s Giacomo Bove Station, established in January 1976 and sabotaged in September 1976.
