2002 California Secretary of State election
The election was held on November 5, 2002, with primaries on June 4, 2002. Democratic State Assemblyman Kevin Shelley of San Francisco defeated Republican Keith Olberg of Hesperia. Shelley received 3,357,173 votes (46.26%), while Olberg received 3,070,879 votes (42.31%). Shelley’s victory over the Republican incumbent Bill Jones marked a shift in state leadership and gave Democrats complete control of state government for the first time since before the Civil War.
