Madinat Al Sultan Qaboos
Madinat Al Sultan Qaboos is an upscale suburb in central Muscat, Oman. The name means “City of Sultan Qaboos,” after Oman’s former ruler who reigned until January 2020. The area is in Muscat Governorate, near Al-Khuwair, Shati Al-Qurm, and Qurum, about 6 kilometers from the sea. It’s well connected to the rest of the city by Sultan Qaboos Street, which separates the suburb from Shatti Al Qurum and the coast.
Historically one of Muscat’s most expensive residential areas, Madinat Qaboos rose in prominence before the nearby Shatti Al Qurum area expanded in the 1990s. It remains popular with expatriates, especially Westerners.
The suburb also hosts one of the city’s oldest shopping centers, which is expanding after Matrah Cold Stores was demolished. The center already features several shops and restaurants, including KFC, McDonald’s, Pizza Hut, and Starbucks, along with local favorites like Pavo Real (a Mexican restaurant known for Monday karaoke), Kargeens (an open-air shisha café), and Ziyara (a shisha bar with outdoor seating and an indoor area).
