Frederick Newton
Frederick Newton (1951 – August 8, 1986) was a Dominican military officer who led the Dominica Defence Force from the country’s independence in 1978 until 1981. He trained with the Guyana Defence Force. In 1981, he organized a coup to remove Prime Minister Eugenia Charles. He and five soldiers were sentenced to death in January 1983 for organizing and taking part in the failed coup, which killed a police officer. The coup was not related to Operation Red Dog. The other five soldiers had their sentences reduced to life imprisonment, but Newton was executed by hanging in Roseau in 1986, the only execution in Dominica since its independence.
