M.E. Time
“M.E. Time” is the fourth episode of Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s first season. It aired on Fox on October 8, 2013, is 22 minutes long, and was written by Gil Ozeri and directed by Troy Miller.
Plot in brief:
- Jake Peralta flirts with a medical examiner, Dr. Rossi, at a crime scene and delays the autopsy report. He even goes out with her and ends up sleeping with her, which slows the investigation.
- At the same time, Amy Santiago leads a purse-snatching case while the sketch artist is sick. Terry Jeffords helps by drawing the suspect, and Holt remains in a mood that no one seems to notice except Amy.
- Jake’s uncooperative, “primary detective” attitude clashes with Rosa Diaz, who tells him to let Boyle lead.
- Amy notices Holt’s mood and tries to cheer him up. She helps by showing that the crime stats aren’t as bad as Holt fears, though the real improvement is barely noticed by him.
- In the medical examiner’s office, Jake and Dr. Rossi discover poison in the stomach of the victim. Boyle ends up arresting Mrs. Patterson.
- The subplot with Terry includes him painting and drawing, which Holt initially dismisses, but Holt later brings home Terry’s painting for his husband.
Reception:
- The episode drew about 3.34 million viewers with a 1.5/4 share in the 18–49 demographic.
- Critics generally liked it, praising the cast’s performances. Some felt the B-story was funnier than the main plot, and others noted the show was still finding its rhythm.
Overall, “M.E. Time” moves Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s dynamics forward, with growing character moments and a mix of workplace humor and awkward romantic misfires.
