Herrs Island
Herrs Island, also known as Washington’s Landing, is a river island in the Allegheny River in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It is part of the Troy Hill neighborhood.
Location and name
The island sits in the Allegheny River within Pittsburgh, located at roughly 40.4667°N, 79.975°W. It is commonly referred to as Herrs Island and Washington’s Landing.
History
The island became a brownfield site after industrial activity declined. By the 1970s most industry had left. In the 1980s and 1990s a major redevelopment transformed the area into a mixed-use community.
Today
Herrs Island is now a mixed-use area with townhomes, business parks, and a marina. It hosts the Three Rivers Rowing Association and the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy. The northern part features a small park, tennis courts, a public lawn, and landscaped areas. A section of the Three Rivers Heritage Trail loops around the island, offering a crushed-gravel path with several overlooks of the Allegheny River.
Head of the Ohio
Since 1987, the island and its piers have been the starting point for the annual Head of the Ohio rowing race. The Three Rivers Rowing Association also maintains its boathouses on the island.
Other
A portion of the island is connected to the city by the 33rd Street Railroad Bridge.
