Lunch (song)
Lunch is a song by American singer Billie Eilish. It is the lead single from her third studio album, Hit Me Hard and Soft (2024), and it was released on May 17, 2024, the same day as the album. The track runs about three minutes and blends electro, synth-pop, synth-rock, and post-punk. It features a heavy bassline and lyrics in which Eilish expresses her attraction to a woman, describing desire and using the line that she could “eat that girl for lunch.” The song was written by Billie Eilish O’Connell and Finneas O’Connell, with Finneas producing.
Eilish has spoken publicly about her attraction to both men and women, and writing Lunch helped her explore this part of herself. She wrote the song after realizing she wanted to explore a same‑gender relationship, using the song to express that desire.
Lunch debuted at Coachella 2024 during a secret DJ set and is the second track on Hit Me Hard and Soft. A self-directed music video premiered about twelve hours after the song and album release. The 90s-inspired video features Eilish in oversized athletic outfits, bold colors, and simple performance takes, with props and retro fashion influenced by artists like Green Day, Tupac Shakur, and the Spice Girls. Critics have called the song bold and described it as a seductive Sapphic synth‑pop track, noting its groove and catchy chorus. The song was released to US radio and international stations as part of the album’s rollout.
