Mario role-playing games are a branch of the Mario series where Mario and often other characters go on adventures to defeat Bowser, using turn-based or strategy-style combat on various Nintendo consoles.

The first Mario RPG was Super Mario RPG (1996), developed by Square for the Super NES.

There are three main sub-series: Paper Mario, Mario & Luigi, and Mario + Rabbids.

Paper Mario: Developed by Intelligent Systems and published by Nintendo, Paper Mario debuted on the Nintendo 64 in 2000. These games started as pure role-playing games, but later entries mix in action-adventure elements. The papers-based world, humor, and characters are praised, while changes to combat have drawn mixed reactions. Since Sticker Star, some fans criticized the removal of certain fictional races, too many identical Toads, and fewer chances for unique character designs.

Mario & Luigi: Developed by AlphaDream and published by Nintendo, the first game was Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga (2003) for the Game Boy Advance. The 3DS remake Bowser’s Inside Story was AlphaDream’s last game before bankruptcy in 2019, after which Nintendo filed a trademark for the series in Argentina. The games are generally praised for their writing, gameplay, and graphics, with some criticism for a perceived lack of innovation.

Mario + Rabbids: A crossover with the Raving Rabbids, co-developed by Ubisoft Milan and Ubisoft Paris and published worldwide by Ubisoft (Nintendo handles Asia). The first game, Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, was released for the Nintendo Switch in 2017.

Platforms across these games include Super NES, Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance, GameCube, Nintendo DS, Wii, Nintendo 3DS, and Nintendo Switch.
