State Archives of Grosseto
The State Archives of Grosseto is the government archive for the Grosseto province. It preserves records from state and public bodies and also from private producers. The archives are in Piazza Ettore Socci 3, Grosseto, in the Palazzo Moschini.
It was created on 22 February 1958 as a branch of the State Archives of Siena. Its first location was on Via Damiano Chiesa, and its initial director was Vittorio Petroni. The early work focused on rebuilding documentary heritage that had been damaged by war and the 1944 flood.
In 1963 the archive gained legal autonomy. It moved temporarily to Via Monterosa in 1969, and in 1980 settled in the Palazzo Moschini. The building was renovated and reopened in May 1983.
The archives hold about 50,000 items dating from the mid-18th century to the 20th century. Among the oldest are twelve parchments from the Civitella Paganico area (1335–1520). The collection includes records from the Grand Duchy of Tuscany starting in 1766, when Grosseto became a provincial capital, as well as documents from the Napoleonic era. There are materials from offices such as the Ufficio dei Fossi e Coltivazioni, the Community Supervisory Chamber, the Maremma Reclamation Office, the Provincial Commissioner, the Civil Engineering Office, and the Prefecture. The institute also has a library with about 9,700 volumes.
