1983 Melbourne Cup
Held at Flemington Racecourse on 1 November 1983, the Melbourne Cup is a 3,200-metre turf handicap race. The winning horse was Kiwi, ridden by jockey Jim Cassidy and trained by Ewen S. Lupton. Kiwi won in 3:19.9 with final odds of 9/1.

In a dramatic finish, Kiwi came from well back to overtake rivals in the final stages, moving to the front with about 50 metres to go and beating Noble Comment by a length and three-quarters. Earlier that year Kiwi had also won the Wellington Cup, making him the only horse to win both the Melbourne Cup and the Wellington Cup in the same year.
