Kuusankoski
Kuusankoski is a district of the Finnish city of Kouvola, located in the Kymenlaakso region in Southern Finland. It used to be its own town, founded as a municipality in 1921 from parts of Iitti and Valkeala. Kuusankoski became a town in 1973 and joined Kouvola in 2009 when six nearby municipalities merged to form the new Kouvola.
The area has about 19,000 residents (2015). Kuusankoski is known for its paper industry, with three large factory complexes along the Kymijoki river, which earned the town the nickname “Paper Capital of Finland.” The river runs through the town.
The cityscape mainly consists of apartment blocks built in the 1960s, along with some older buildings like a school and a church. Notable structures include Kuusankoskitalo, a culture center, and a functionalist-style library.
Notable people linked to Kuusankoski include footballer Sami Hyypiä, and former Nightwish singer Tarja Turunen lives in the town. In 2009, the six municipalities merged to form Kouvola, which has a population of over 80,000.
Kuusankoski also has a speedway track on the southern edge of the area, Kuusankoski Speedway, which hosted the Finnish Individual Speedway Championship final in 2007.
