2016 Umaglesi Liga
The 2016 Umaglesi Liga was a short, transitional season in Georgia to move the top-flight schedule from Autumn–Spring to Spring–Autumn. The season ran from 7 August to 11 December 2016. Dinamo Tbilisi were the defending champions.
Because of the calendar change, the league shrank from 16 teams to 14, with Sapovnela Terjola and Merani Martvili not being replaced. The 14 teams were split into two groups of seven (Group Red and Group White). Each club played home-and-away against the other six teams in its group, for 12 games per team.
At the end of the group phase, the two group winners, Samtredia and Chikhura Sachkhere, met in a two-legged Championship Final to decide the overall champion and European qualifying spots. Samtredia won the final and became Georgia’s champions, earning a place in the 2017–18 UEFA Champions League (second qualifying round). Chikhura Sachkhere, the runner-up, qualified for the 2017–18 UEFA Europa League.
The remaining teams competed in playoff rounds to determine the other European berths and relegations. The season saw four teams relegated: Sioni Bolnisi, Guria Lanchkhuti, Tskhinvali, and Zugdidi.
Overall, 86 matches were played and 212 goals were scored, averaging about 2.47 goals per game.
