Kjøllefjord Airport
Kjøllefjord Airport was a small general aviation airfield in Kjøllefjord, Lebesby, Finnmark, Norway. It had a gravel runway 630 by 40 meters and a simple shed that served as the terminal. Plans began in the mid-1960s, led by the Norving airline to run air taxi and air ambulance services. Construction started in 1973 and it opened in 1974, the same year Mehamn Airport opened nearby about 30 kilometers away. Because Mehamn was larger and closer, Kjøllefjord saw little use and was abandoned in the 1980s.
In 1966 planners suggested several regional airports for Finnmark, and Norving helped develop smaller airfields like Kjøllefjord since the region had low priority for national funding. The municipality contributed about 1 million NOK. The airport occasionally handled ambulance flights, especially when Mehamn was fog-bound. In 1978 it received permission to operate public flights, but a taxi-flight request was rejected to avoid taking traffic from Mehamn. Today the runway and terminal remain but are dilapidated, and the site has been used for storage during windmill construction.
