Ulpius Marcellus (son)

Ulpius Marcellus (fl. 211–212) was once thought to be the last governor of Britannia before the province was divided into separate regions. He is said to be the son of Ulpius Marcellus, who governed Britannia during Commodus’s reign. Older sources treated him as a separate person, but modern historians usually name Lucius Alfenus Senecio as the last governor. The idea of a second Ulpius Marcellus comes from two inscriptions at the Cilurnum fort that mention his name with the second ala of Asturians. The Asturians are now dated to the late 2nd century, so these inscriptions likely refer to the earlier governor rather than a distinct later figure.
