Kara Neumann case

Madeline Kara Neumann, an 11-year-old girl from Weston, Wisconsin, died on March 23, 2008 from undiagnosed diabetes after her parents prayed for her instead of getting medical help. Leilani and Dale Neumann, who described themselves as Pentecostals but were not part of an organized church, believed sickness had spiritual causes and that prayer could cure illness. They decided not to seek medical treatment, believing they would be “putting the doctor before God.” The parents were charged with second-degree reckless homicide. Dale Neumann was convicted on May 22, 2009, and Leilani Neumann on August 1, 2009. They were sentenced on October 6, 2009 to 10 years of probation, with six months in jail to be served over six years. In July 2013, the Wisconsin Supreme Court upheld their convictions by a 6–1 margin. The case renewed discussion about faith healing in the United States.
