Md. Salim (judge)
Md. Salim is a judge in the High Court Division of the Bangladesh Supreme Court. He was born on 11 September 1969 and studied at the University of Rajshahi, where he earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. He became a lawyer in the district courts on 31 August 1996, joined the High Court Division on 1 February 1997, and was admitted to the Appellate Division on 24 August 2010. He was made an additional judge of the High Court Division on 12 February 2015 and became a permanent judge on 12 February 2017.
Notable cases and actions:
- October 2017: With Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed, ordered the government to complete the Central Effluent Treatment Plant at the Savar tannery estate within four weeks.
- 2017: With the same judge, issued a two-month injunction preventing MP Mahbubur Rahman Talukder from serving as chairman of 11 educational institutions in Patuakhali District.
- April 2018: Along with Justice Refaat Ahmed, suspended the term extension of the Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh after Smart Jeans’ contract was suspended.
- November 2019: Declared the import of MT Producer for the shipbreaking industry illegal due to the ship’s radioactive contamination.
- 9 December 2021: Upheld a tax evasion verdict in a case involving an imported Hummer and Harunur Rashid, and commuted the sentence to time served.
- March 2022: With Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam, paused a narcotics case against Pori Moni for three months and criticized the Police Bureau of Investigation over its handling of the murder of Nurul Islam, a labor activist, in Rajshahi.
- 2022: Denied bail to Tangail mayor Shahidur Rahman Khan Mukti in a murder case and denied bail to Selim Khan, former chairman of Laxmipur Union, over illegal wealth.
- 2022: Granted bail to Jhumon Das in a case involving alleged insults to religion under the Digital Security Act.
- February 2023: With Justice Md Riaz Uddin Khan, granted permanent bail to BNP politicians Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Mirza Abbas in a case related to clashes between police and BNP activists.
- February 2023: Granted anticipatory bail to 25 pro-BNP lawyers over violence at the Bangladesh Supreme Court Bar Association.
Md. Salim continues to serve as a justice of the High Court Division.
