Lewis Cobden Thomas

Lewis Cobden Thomas (6 August 1865 – 14 April 1928) was a Welsh rugby union forward who played for Neath and Cardiff and won two caps for Wales in 1885. He was born in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales, and died in Neath, Wales, at age 62.

Education and career
Thomas studied at Merthyr College, Wesleyan College Taunton, Llandovery College, Aberystwyth University, and University College Cardiff. He trained as a solicitor and founded a law firm in Neath. He entered public service, joining Neath Town Council in 1897 and becoming mayor in 1900.

Rugby and other feats
As a player, Thomas was a forward for Neath RFC and Cardiff RFC. He earned his Wales caps in the 1885 Home Nations Championship, in matches against England and Scotland. Wales lost to England but drew 0–0 with Scotland in the next game, after which he was not selected again. His Wales cap and jersey are kept at the Neath clubhouse. The 1885 Welsh team is remembered for introducing Arthur Gould to the national side.

Other recognition
Thomas was also a strong swimmer and once rescued a man from drowning at the Blue Pool, Pontsarn, Merthyr, for which he received a Royal Humane Society certificate.
