Solicitor General of the Gambia: The Solicitor General is a senior government lawyer and the second-highest official in the Ministry of Justice, after the Attorney General. Cherno Marenah has held the post since 2017. The Solicitor General acts for the Attorney General when they are unavailable and also serves as the Legal Secretary, effectively the ministry’s permanent secretary, under the Law Officers Act. The appointment is made by the President of the Gambia. The role reflects an English legal tradition, where the Solicitor General stands in for the Attorney General in their absence.
