Comedian
A comedian is someone who tries to make people laugh. They can tell jokes, act silly, use funny situations, or perform with props. When a comedian talks directly to the audience on stage, that’s stand-up comedy. People sometimes call a funny person a “comic,” though some use the word “comedian” to emphasize the show is about making things funny.
A lot of humor comes from words, but how a comedian acts and their stage persona also matter. Since the 1980s, a style called alternative comedy has grown, featuring offbeat, experimental, and observational humor. Comedians often joke about themselves and their own backgrounds.
Where they perform and travel is part of a comedian’s life. They may tour famous festival hubs like Just for Laughs in Montreal, the Edinburgh Fringe, or the Melbourne Comedy Festival. Winning big awards, such as the Edinburgh Comedy Award, can boost a career and lead to work in film or television.
A short history shows how broad comedy is. In ancient Greece, Aristophanes wrote plays that aimed to entertain. Shakespeare wrote many comedies with happy endings. In the United States, early stand-up grew from vaudeville shows in the late 1800s to the 1930s. British humor has roots in 19th-century music halls with performers like Charlie Chaplin and Stan Laurel, who helped develop sketch and physical comedy.
Today, comedians work in many media. Some are on radio or TV talk shows, sketch programs, panel shows, or sitcoms. Others perform stand-up in clubs or stream their acts online. Famous names span from Bob Hope and Eddie Izzard to Monty Python, The Big Fat Quiz of the Year, and modern online comics like Bo Burnham and Bridget Christie. Jokes come in many forms—puns and wordplay, misdirection, observations about everyday life, self-deprecation, or parodies.
Comedy formats vary. Stand-up is a solo performance on stage. Sketch shows use short, funny scenes with a group of performers. Panel shows combine humor with questions and games. Some comedians become well known through TV, films, or online videos, while still doing live stand-up.
Humor is a flexible career path. A comedian might build a following in clubs, on television, in movies, or online. The art continues to evolve as new formats and platforms appear, but the core idea stays the same: make people laugh.
