Jason Richardson
Jason Richardson is a former American basketball player who spent 14 seasons in the NBA. He was born on January 20, 1981, in Saginaw, Michigan, and grew up in Michigan. He went to Arthur Hill High School, played college basketball for Michigan State, and helped the Spartans win the national championship in 2000. He entered the NBA in 2001 as the fifth overall pick by the Golden State Warriors.
Richardson was known for his high-flying dunks and his scoring ability. He won the NBA Slam Dunk Contest twice, in 2002 and 2003, becoming one of the league’s most exciting players. He also earned a place on the NBA All-Rookie First Team in 2002. A memorable moment from his time with the Warriors is when he bounced the ball off Carlos Boozer’s forehead and hit a game-winning three.
Over his career, Richardson played for the Golden State Warriors (2001–2007), the Charlotte Bobcats (2007–2008), the Phoenix Suns (2008–2010), the Orlando Magic (2010–2012), and the Philadelphia 76ers (2012–2015). He became known as a strong shooter and, in several seasons, as a steady three-point threat. He also set a Warriors franchise record by hitting eight three-pointers in a single game during a home win over the Suns.
His later years were marked by injuries. He was traded to the Magic in 2010 and signed a four-year contract in 2011, but knee problems limited his playing time. He joined the 76ers in 2012 and played his final NBA game in April 2015. Richardson announced his retirement in September 2015 due to concerns about his knee.
Richardson is the father of NBA player Jase Richardson. His younger son, Jaxon, is a highly touted basketball recruit. In 2025, Richardson was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame, with the ceremony held in Detroit on December 19, 2025.
