Herring Island (Elk River)

Herring Island is a private island in Randalia, Cecil County, Maryland, in the Elk River. It covers about 2 hectares (4.9 acres) and rises up to about 1 meter above the water.

The island formed in the 1600s when the peninsula of Herring Creek eroded away, turning into an island. Native tribes hunted there, and English troops camped on the island during the War of 1812. From the early 1900s to the 1970s it was a Boy Scout camp with several log cabins. After a fire destroyed the main cabin, a family bought the property, and it has been a private residence since.
