List of cricketers who have carried the bat in international cricket
Carrying the bat means an opening batsman finishes not out when all the other 10 wickets have fallen. It can also happen if some teammates retire hurt or are unable to bat, but it does not apply when the innings ends by declaration or when a target is chased. This rare feat has happened 75 times in international cricket across Tests, ODIs, and T20Is.
Tests
- Bernard Tancred (South Africa) was the first to carry the bat, scoring 26 not out as South Africa were all out for 47 against England in 1889.
- Jack Barrett (Australia) was the first to carry the bat on debut (the following year).
- Bobby Abel (England) became the first to carry the bat and make a century (132) in 1892.
- Bill Woodfull (Australia) was the first to carry the bat twice in Tests (73 not out in 1933).
- Other players who have carried the bat more than once in Tests: Bill Lawry (Australia), Len Hutton (England), Glenn Turner (New Zealand) have done it twice; Dean Elgar (South Africa) and Desmond Haynes (West Indies) have done it three times.
- The highest Test score while carrying the bat is Tom Latham’s 264 against Sri Lanka in December 2018.
- In Tests, Australia has carried the bat more times than any other country, followed by England.
- A total of 49 players have carried their bats on 57 occasions in Test cricket.
