Heike Fassbender
Heike Fassbender is a German mathematician who works in numerical linear algebra. She is a professor at the Institute for Computational Mathematics at the Technical University of Braunschweig and was the president of GAMM (the International Association of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics) from 2017 to 2019. She was the first woman to lead GAMM.
Fassbender earned her master's degree in computer science at the University at Buffalo and completed her PhD at the University of Bremen in 1992. Her dissertation, supervised by Angelika Bunse-Gerstner and Ludwig F. Elsner, studied numerical methods for discrete trigonometric polynomial approximation.
She moved to the Technical University of Munich in 2000 and joined Braunschweig in 2002. She served as vice president for teaching, studies, and further education at Braunschweig from 2008 to 2012.
She wrote the book Symplectic Methods for the Symplectic Eigenproblem (Kluwer, 2002). In 2018 she was appointed to a four-year term on the German Accreditation Council and she is treasurer of the International Council for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (ICIAM). On January 1, 2023, she was elected as a chair member of the SIAM Council.
