Harburg, Hamburg
Harburg is a borough of the city of Hamburg in Germany. It lies on the southern bank of the Elbe River and includes parts of the Port of Hamburg as well as residential and rural areas. The area covers about 161 square kilometers and has around 177,000 residents (about 176,900 in 2023). The borough is served by the Hamburg S-Bahn, and Hamburg-Harburg station is an important rail hub where long‑distance trains also stop.
Historically, Harburg was the capital of the Harburg district in the former state of Lower Saxony. In 1927 it merged with Wilhelmsburg to form Harburg-Wilhelmsburg. In 1937, under the Greater Hamburg Act, Harburg became part of the city of Hamburg. The district capital moved to Winsen in 1944. In 2007–2008 the borough was reorganized, and Wilhelmsburg was moved to Hamburg-Mitte.
Harburg is divided into quarters and offers several schools and services, including the Hamburg University of Technology, which is well known for its engineering programs.
