St Austell Gulls
The St Austell Gulls were a speedway team from Cornwall, England. They raced from 1949 to 1964 at the Cornish Stadium in Par, St Austell, and later returned from 1997 to 2000 at the Clay Country Moto Parc in Nanpean. Their colours were blue and white. The track was 360 yards (330 m) long from 1949–1964 and 230 metres (250 yd) long from 1997–2000.
In 1949 meetings ran under several names before finally becoming the Gulls. They joined National League Division Three in 1950–1951, then moved to the Southern League in 1952, finishing bottom in 1952 and 1953. When the Southern League ended in 1954 they tried to join National League Division Two but were not licensed. Racing did not resume until 1963, when they competed in the Provincial League for one season, then folded in 1964.
In 1997 promoter Brian Annear built a track in a disused china clay pit. It was small and basic; the referee’s room started as a caravan and was later replaced by a double-decker bus. The Gulls joined the Amateur League, later the Conference League, and by 1998 had built a strong local team. They won the Conference League championship and the Knockout Cup in 1998, and the Knockout Cup again in 1999. The final season was 2000; the club could not move up, and the track lease was handed to others who opened the Trelawny Tigers in 2001.
