Hurricane, Alabama
Hurricane is an unincorporated community in Baldwin County, Alabama, on the Tensaw River, about 12 miles north of Spanish Fort. It has also been known as Hurricane Bayou and Tensaw Station. In the Civil War, it was Tensaw Station, the last stop on the Mobile and Great Northern Railroad, which connected Montgomery to Meridian. Because there was a rail gap between Montgomery and Selma, soldiers and supplies were moved by train from Montgomery to Tensaw Station, then shipped by steamship to Mobile, and loaded onto trains to Meridian. A post office opened as Hurricane Bayou in 1877, was renamed Hurricane in 1895, and closed in 1962. The community was named after a hurricane that struck the area.
