Gurratan Singh

Gurratan Singh is a Canadian lawyer and former politician. He represented Brampton East in Ontario’s Legislative Assembly as a member of the Ontario New Democratic Party from 2018 to 2022. He was born on May 13, 1984, in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, and is the brother of Jagmeet Singh, a federal NDP leader.

Education and career
Singh earned an Honours Bachelor of Arts in philosophy and religious studies from McMaster University and a Juris Doctor from Osgoode Hall Law School (York University) in 2010. He worked as a litigation lawyer before entering politics.

2018 election and controversy
In the 2018 provincial election, Singh was elected as the MPP for Brampton East. During the campaign, a 2006 Facebook post showed him holding a poster that read “Fuck the Police.” He apologized unreservedly to police officers and the policing community.

2022 election and afterward
Singh ran for re-election in 2022 but was defeated by Hardeep Grewal of the Progressive Conservative Party. After leaving politics, he joined Crestview Strategies as a vice president.

Personal life
Singh is married to Satvir Kaur Lachhar (since 2018) and they have one child. He lives in Canada with his family.
