The Change Inside of Me
The Change Inside of Me is a song by MercyMe from their 2002 album Spoken For. It was released on May 2, 2003 as the third single. The track is 3 minutes and 24 seconds long and blends rock, pop rock, and adult contemporary styles. It was written by MercyMe members James Bryson, Nathan Cochran, Michael John Scheuchzer, Bart Millard, Robin Shaffer, and Pete Kipley, who also produced it. Recording took place at several studios across the United States, with mastering by Richard Dodd and mixing by F. Reid Shippen.
Musically, it’s described as a power ballad with guitars and drums, and it's also called upbeat pop/rock rooted in the pop side of adult contemporary. Lyrically, it’s a simple praise song about positive change coming through Jesus.
Critics praised the song’s hook and sound. It peaked at number eight on the Radio & Records Christian AC chart and stayed on the chart for 27 weeks.
Bart Millard has said it’s one of his favorite Spoken For tracks and that he wanted something up-tempo after writing “I Can Only Imagine,” feeling the band had outdone themselves with this song.
